Rental cars and car sharing: what carries over from your own policy

When you borrow or rent a car, it is not obvious whose insurance applies. The answer depends on your policy, the rental terms and the card you pay with.

The short version

  1. Your own policy may extend to a rental, depending on its coverages.
  2. Rental companies and car-sharing services usually offer their own protection options.
  3. Some credit cards offer rental coverage with conditions.

Your own policy

Some personal policies extend liability or physical-damage coverage to rentals. Ask your insurer which coverages apply and whether limits change.

The rental counter

Rental companies sell damage waivers and extra liability. The agreement says what is covered, what is excluded and what you owe if something happens.

Car sharing

Services that rent by the hour or day usually include some protection in the price, with a deductible. Their terms spell it out.

Cards and borrowing

Some credit cards cover rental damage if you pay with them, under conditions. A friend’s car is usually covered by that friend’s policy first. We do not give quotes.
