Buyer note 2

Buying from a private seller: the insurance step people forget

Buying a car from a private seller is different from a dealership because nobody hands you a folder. The insurance step is yours to remember.

The short version

  1. Many insurers want a vehicle to be added to a policy before or at the time of purchase.
  2. The title, bill of sale and VIN are the key documents.
  3. Rules for registration and temporary plates vary by state.

Before the handshake

Insurers have different rules about when a new vehicle must be added. Many give a short grace period for newly acquired cars, though it is wise to confirm in advance.

The documents

Get a signed title, a bill of sale and the VIN. Compare the VIN on the title with the one on the car, and keep copies of everything.

State requirements

Each state sets rules for title transfer, registration and temporary plates, and many require proof of insurance first. Your state motor vehicle agency explains them.

A short checklist

Confirm insurance, check paperwork, and then drive home. We do not see paperwork or give quotes.
